Apple’s pattern of launching budget-friendly iPhone 16 SE models took a brief hiatus in 2023, with the last release occurring in 2022 and the one preceding that in 2020. However, according to a recent report from Korea, it seems the tech giant will continue this trend in 2025, skipping a release in 2024. The upcoming iPhone 16 SE is expected to introduce a notable upgrade to its affordable line by featuring an OLED screen, a departure from the previous LCD panels used in this series.
The report indicates that three display manufacturers are vying for Apple’s contract to supply panels for the upcoming iPhone 16 SE. Samsung, surprisingly offering the most economical option at $30 per panel, faces competition from BOE at $35 and Tianma at $40. Apple, known for its negotiation prowess, has countered with a substantially lower offer of $20 per panel. Negotiations are ongoing, and no manufacturer has secured the contract as of now.
The display panels destined for the 2025 iPhone 16 SE will bear similarities to those found in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. Anticipated specifications include a 6.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1170×2532, a peak brightness of 1,200 nits, and the possibility of incorporating Ceramic Shield glass (although unconfirmed) to potentially optimize cost savings.
The Korean report highlights that both Samsung Display and BOE have achieved favorable yields for the panels, positioning them as strong contenders. In contrast, Tianma is deemed less likely to secure the contract due to technological disparities. Samsung, having previously manufactured iPhone 14 panels, possesses a competitive advantage by utilizing existing tooling or inventory, potentially influencing its lower pricing strategy.
Samsung’s willingness to offer a lower price may also be a strategic move to outbid BOE and maximize profits from the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series panels. On the other hand, BOE, having faced challenges in iPhone 15 panel production last year, is keen to secure additional orders to bolster its OLED panel production capacity and regain lost opportunities.
