Samsung showcased a potentially groundbreaking 12.4-inch rollable OLED panel at the annual Display Week trade show in Los Angeles. While rollable concepts are not new, Samsung’s invention stands out for being the largest and most compact version yet.
Compared to current sliding screens that can only expand up to 3 times their original size, Samsung’s panel offers an impressive 5x scalability, ranging from 49mm to 254.4mm. This achievement was made possible by utilizing an O-shaped axis that imitates a scroll. Samsung Display refers to this innovation as Rollable Flex, and it can be fully rolled up.
In addition to the Rollable Flex, Samsung also unveiled the Flex In & Out OLED panel. Unlike existing technologies that only allow flexible OLEDs to fold in one direction, this new panel can bend in both directions. This is a departure from Samsung’s previous devices like the Galaxy Flip4 and Fold4.
Lastly, Samsung introduced the world’s first OLED panel with an integrated fingerprint reader and heart rate sensor. Unlike current implementations that rely on a small sensor area, Samsung’s solution enables users to unlock the device by touching anywhere on the screen surface with their finger.
The panel itself incorporates an embedded organic photodiode (OPD) for light sensing. This technology can also measure blood pressure, heart rate, and stress levels by monitoring the contraction and relaxation of blood vessels.
