Samsung has expanded its range of Tactical Edition devices by introducing two new smartphones: the Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition and the Galaxy XCover6 Pro Tactical Edition. These rugged smartphones are specifically designed for military personnel and individuals in similar professions. Both devices share the same specifications as their standard counterparts but come with additional features tailored for tactical use.
Firstly, the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro Tactical Edition boasts MIL-STD-810H certification, ensuring its durability in extreme weather conditions and providing water resistance up to 5 feet of water for 30 minutes. In contrast, the Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition is IP68-rated and comes with a robust military-grade case that can be either chest-mounted or worn on the forearm.
Both smartphones are equipped with a night vision mode, making them compatible with night vision optical devices. They also feature auto-touch sensitivity, enabling operation while wearing gloves, and an auto-rotating lock screen for use with flip-down chest mounts.
Additionally, the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy XCover6 Pro Tactical Editions support external GPS for precise location data during field operations. They can also connect to drone feeds and laser range finders, enhancing mission effectiveness.
In terms of communication capabilities, these tactical devices include purpose-built drivers for tactical radio and mission device protocols, alongside support for conventional cellular technologies like LTE, CBRS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.
Both smartphones feature a Stealth Mode that disables LTE and e-911, effectively muting all RF broadcasting, including GPS, at a hardware level. This ensures secure, off-grid communication. The devices also offer the ability to toggle illumination on and off when using night vision devices to remain discreet.
Considering the security aspect, Samsung Knox provides hardware-level encryption for cybersecurity. Additionally, Knox Dual Data at Rest (DualDAR) offers dual-layer encryption to protect confidential data even when the smartphone is powered off. Furthermore, the S23 and XCover6 Pro Tactical Editions support serverless license activation, simplifying deployment in various operator environments.
On the software front, both the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy XCover6 Pro Tactical Editions run on Android 13-based One UI 5.1 out of the box. They include the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK) and the Battlefield Assisted Trauma Distributed Observation Kit (BATDOK). ATAK enhances situational awareness through real-time mapping, messaging, and geo-fencing, while BATDOK collects and shares real-time patient encounter information.
Both smartphones support Samsung DeX and dual VPN chaining, enabling the use of multiple VPNs for added security. There are also features such as automatic call acceptance and recording in speaker mode, as well as the option to prevent outgoing calls.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition boasts 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the Samsung Galaxy XCover6 Pro Tactical Edition offers 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Pricing details for these smartphones are not available to the general public, as they are exclusively sold to military operators.
