A few years ago, Motorola launched the Moto G 5G as their most affordable 5G phone, followed by a sequel in 2022. Now, the company has released a new model of the Moto G 5G, as well as the latest Moto G Stylus. Both phones have undergone cost-cutting measures to decrease their price, but this has also limited their features.
The Moto G 5G (2023) is equipped with sub-6GHz 5G connectivity thanks to the Snapdragon 480+ chipset. While this may seem less impressive than the Snapdragon 750G of the 2020 model or even the Dimensity 700 of the 2022 model, the 2023 version will only cost $250 when it becomes available on May 25th. This is a significant decrease in price compared to the 2022 model, which had an MSRP of $400. The new version will be available from Motorola.com, Best Buy, Amazon, and various carriers. Later this year, it will also be available in Canada from select retailers and carriers.
The Moto G 5G (2023) pairs the SD 480+ chipset with 4GB of RAM, 128GB storage, and a microSD slot that can hold cards up to 1TB. At launch, the phone will run mostly stock Android 13. Like the 2022 model, this phone has a 6.5” LCD with 1,600 x 720px resolution (20:9). However, the display will run at 120Hz, up from 90Hz. The phone has a water-repellent design, is 8.4mm thick, and weighs 189g. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom, next to the USB-C port. The port is used for charging the 5,000mAh battery at 15W as well as for data transfer (USB 2.0). Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support are also included.
On the rear, there is a 48MP camera (f/1.7 aperture, 0.8µm native pixels, 1.6µm after binning), along with a pair of 2MP modules – one for depth and one for macro shots. The main camera can record 1080p video at 30fps. There is also an 8MP selfie camera (f/2.0, 1.12µm) that can also do 1080p @ 30fps video. This front camera can also be used for face unlocking, or you can use the fingerprint reader.
The Moto G Stylus (2023) is a 4G-only phone powered by the Helio G85 chipset, with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. However, you can still use a microSD card of up to 1TB. The new Stylus is available in the US for $200, which is a lower price compared to the 2022 model, which was $300 for a 4/128GB unit (there was no 4/64GB option). The phone comes with Android 13 out of the box, whereas the older model launched with Android 11.
Moving on to the Moto G Stylus (2023), this phone boasts a water-repellent design and a 5,000mAh battery that supports 15W charging. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack positioned next to the USB-C port at the bottom and features stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, just like its counterpart. The fingerprint reader is placed on the side of the phone.
The camera configuration includes a 50MP primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and smaller 0.64µm pixels that become 1.28µm after binning. It has the capability to record 1080p video at 30fps and also comes with a 2MP macro camera at the back, in addition to an 8MP front-facing camera that can capture 1080p video at 30fps. By the way, Motorola also revealed its latest flagship for North America today, the Moto Edge+ (2023).
