Motorola Razr 40 & Razr 40 Ultra Launched in China

Motorola has officially announced its latest lineup of foldable phones in China, confirming months of speculation and hints. The flagship model is the Razr 40 Ultra, featuring a sizable 3.6-inch cover display and powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. For those seeking a more affordable option, there is the Razr 40, which incorporates the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC and a smaller 1.5-inch cover screen.

One of the standout features of the Moto Razr 40 Ultra is its impressive 3.6-inch external display. This is currently the largest cover screen available on a clamshell foldable phone, equipped with a 10-bit AMOLED panel boasting a resolution of 1066 x 1056 pixels, a refresh rate of 144Hz, and Gorilla Glass Victus for enhanced protection. The device offers interactive wallpapers and customized clock faces, but its capabilities go beyond aesthetics.

Similar to previous Razr foldable models, the cover screen allows users to perform various tasks without needing to unfold the main display. This includes activities such as watching YouTube videos, checking navigation details on Google Maps, or responding to emails.

The Razr 40 Ultra sports a 6.69-inch FHD+ LTPO AMOLED main display with a refresh rate of 165Hz, HDR10+ support, and a peak brightness of 1,400 nits. Its Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) panel features a five-layer protective structure and a teardrop hinge design that ensures no gap when closed. The display also houses a 32MP front-facing camera and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The frame of the Razr 40 Ultra is constructed from 7000-series aluminum, while the back comes in Infinite Black and Glacier Blue colors with Gorilla Glass Victus protection, or the Viva Magenta colorway with vegan leather. When unfolded, the device measures just 6.99mm in thickness, expanding to 15.1mm when folded, and weighs 188 grams. It also features an IP52 water-repellent coating.

Motorola has made efforts to enhance the longevity and durability of the hinge by reducing its components to 85 parts. The phone can be positioned on its back at multiple angles for capturing content.

In terms of cameras, the Razr 40 Ultra boasts a 12MP main sensor with OIS and a 13MP ultrawide module that doubles as a macro camera. It runs on Android 13 with the Moto MyUX interface on top and offers the Ready For desktop interface when connected to an external monitor. Motorola promises three OS updates for the device. The phone is equipped with a 3,800mAh battery with 30W wired charging support and up to 5W wireless charging. It comes in Infinite Black, Glacier Blue, and Viva Magenta color options.

In China, the pricing for the Razr 40 Ultra starts at CNY 5,699 ($801) for the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage variant, and goes up to CNY 6,399 ($900) for the 12GB RAM and 512GB storage version. Open sales for the Chinese market will commence on June 5. International pricing and availability details will be revealed later during the global launch of the Razr 40 series.

As for the Motorola Razr 40, it shares similarities with the Razr 40 Ultra, featuring a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution but with a slightly lower refresh rate of 144Hz. The cover screen measures 1.5 inches and offers basic notification management while also serving as a viewfinder for the cameras.

The Razr 40 maintains the 7000-series aluminum frame and IP52 water-repellent rating of the Razr 40 Ultra but is slightly thicker at 7.35mm when unfolded and 15.8mm when folded. It sports a 64MP main camera with OIS and a 13MP ultrawide sensor, while the front-facing camera remains at 32MP.

Under the hood, the Razr 40 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset, accompanied by 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. It comes with a larger 4,200mAh battery and supports the same 30W fast wired charging and up to 5W wireless charging.

The Moto Razr 40 comes in Sage Green, Vanilla Cream, and Summer Lilac color options. In China, it will be priced at CNY 3,999 ($562) for the 8GB RAM and 128GB storage variant, and CNY 4,699 ($660) for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage model. The Razr 40 is set to be available for open sale in China starting from June 25.
