According to a recent report from industry sources in Korea, Apple’s inaugural foldable device may hit the market in 2026 or 2027. The internal screen is expected to measure approximately 7-8 inches, leading to speculation that it could potentially replace the iPad mini within Apple’s product lineup.
While rumors circulate about its role, the specific specifications and features of the foldable device are yet to be finalized. Interestingly, Apple is currently in the testing phase for a new generation iPad mini featuring an OLED screen.
This raises questions about the strategic sense of introducing such a model if it is destined to be swiftly phased out to make room for the foldable device. In the realm of display technology, reports suggest that Apple is gearing up to introduce OLED screens to its iPad Pro series later this year. However, an OLED iPad mini may not debut until the following year.
Apple seems to be exploring foldable screen options from both Samsung Display and LG Display, with samples of panels in the 6″ and 7″ size ranges, respectively. Despite this, recent indications suggest that Apple is leaning towards a larger foldable device for its initial foray into this technology.
In the event that Apple greenlights the project, it is highly likely that it will initially place panel orders with Samsung Display, leveraging the company’s extensive experience in supplying foldable panels to Samsung Electronics. If Apple opts for a dual-supplier strategy, LG Display could commence mass production of foldable panels for Apple approximately a year after Samsung.
Looking further ahead, around 2028, Apple may even unveil a 20.25″ foldable product, potentially branded as either an iPad or a Mac. It’s important to note that the 20.25″ size refers to the internal dimensions of the folding screen.
